Volunteer Montgomery History
Previously known as The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Volunteer Montgomery has been serving the communities of Montgomery County and Radford since 1973. Over the past 50+ years, the program provides volunteer opportunities that utilized their skills and abilities for volunteers of all ages. We strive to serve our community, empower volunteers, and to help make a better tomorrow, not only for our community, but for everyone.
Over the years, Volunteer Montgomery members have logged over 400,000 volunteer hours to the community in hundreds of placements across the New River Valley. In 1994, RSVP won the prestigious JCPenney Golden Rule Award for outstanding volunteer service by an agency. Volunteers received the 1995 Governor's Award for Volunteerism Excellence, citing RSVP as "a model for other volunteer organizations in the Commonwealth." In 2025, Volunteer Montgomery was awarded the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Community Service of the Year Award.
2025 Statistics:
- Saved New River Valley residents over $243,042 through Medicare counseling to seniors.
- Provided visitation, entertainment, classes, and parties for residents of five nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and Veteran care centers.
- Through fundraising efforts, the Advisory Council awarded two $1,000 scholarships to area high school seniors preparing to pursue studies in the areas of human services or medical services.
- Assisted clients of the New River Valley Agency on Aging and the Virginia Veteran and Family Support Program with 300 bags of basic household supplies and personal hygiene items (valued at $50 per bag) through our Supplies for Homebound Seniors program.
