Montgomery County Parks and Recreation (MCPR) is joining a new youth softball organization affiliated with the Babe Ruth Softball League in 2018.
Several other local recreation departments are also joining the new organization to include the Blacksburg Softball Association; Christiansburg Parks and Recreation; Radford Parks and Recreation; Pulaski County Parks and Recreation; Pembroke Recreation; Pearisburg Recreation; and Narrows Recreation.
Since its inception in 1984, the Babe Ruth Softball League has become one of the premier softball programs in North America. It emphasizes education, skill development, participation and fun. Montgomery County will offer Babe Ruth Softball for the 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U age divisions. The age deadline date for players is January 1, 2018.
Montgomery County previously participated in Dixie Softball where MCPR had a successful run, winning 11 district championships, three state championships and made three appearances in the Dixie Softball World Series finishing as runners up in both 2014 and 2016.
"We had a great run in Dixie Softball, but we are excited for our future in Babe Ruth Softball," said Auburn Athletics Supervisor, Chris Slusher. "We are also excited to see all the other NRV recreation departments making the switch as well, which will provide a great local league to participate in, and still give us the opportunity to precede along a tournament trail."
Montgomery County will remain with Dixie Youth Baseball for youth baseball ages 9-12.
For players ages 13-15, Montgomery County Parks and Recreation; Christiansburg Parks and Recreation; Blacksburg Baseball Association; Narrows Recreation; Pearisburg Recreation; Pembroke Recreation; Pulaski County Parks and Recreation; and Radford Parks and Recreation will also be joining Babe Ruth Baseball League.
The age deadline date for Babe Ruth Baseball players is May 1, 2018. The Babe Ruth Baseball League was founded in 1951 to create an opportunity for players to use standard 90’ diamonds under official rules used by Major League Baseball.
Registration for youth baseball and softball begins January 10, 2018, and runs through March 2, 2018. You can register in person or online at www.montgomerycountyva.gov/parks.
