Broomin’ & Bloomin’ Celebrates 40 Years!

Commemorative garden planted at Coal Mining Heritage Park along Huckleberry Trail.


In 1983, an annual spring cleanup event was established: Broomin’ & Bloomin’. This year marked the 40th anniversary. 

Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Plants Broomin and Bloomin Commemorative Garden Along Huckleberry TrailTo commemorate the anniversary, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors gathered at the Coal Mining Heritage Park along the Huckleberry Trail to plant a garden. Native species to include 'Berried Treasure' Huckleberry Bush (Gaylussacia Brachycera); Dwarf Alder (Fothergilla gardenii); Red Sprite Winterberry (Liex Veticillata); and Tiny Wine Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) were planted.

American Heritage Girls Troop VA2017 picks up trash along Huckleberry TrailIn addition, in April, 167 citizens volunteered to help clean up roadsides, parks, streams, school grounds and other public properties throughout the Montgomery County. In total, over a ton of trash was collected. Pictured here are members of the American Heritage Girls Troop VA2017 and the trash they collected along a portion of the Huckleberry Trail.
