  • The Crossings in Blacksburg was recently purchased by English Meadows and has been added to our monthly programming. We will visit on the second Monday of each month at 2 p.m. to assist with a tea party for residents. Volunteers are also needed to assist with manicures and hand massage. Call the RSVP office for more information.

Valentines for Vets

We will once again participate in the nationwide Valentines for Vets program by making valentines for the patients at the VA Medical Center and the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem. A craft day is scheduled at the RSVP office on Friday, February 9 at 10 a.m., or you may work on cards at home. The deadline to turn in your valentines to RSVP is Monday, February 11.

Tax-Aide

The AARP Tax-Aide Program provides free federal and Virginia tax preparation to low and middle-income taxpayers of all ages. You do not have to be a tax expert, training and certification are provided. Volunteer positions are being a tax counselor (prepares tax returns) or a client facilitator (helps check in clients). Counselors and Facilitators are needed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 1 - 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon during tax season. Please contact pballard@vt.edu or phone 382-1189 for more information.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Help your community in preparing taxes free of charge by becoming a volunteer with VITA, an IRS sponsored program that offers free tax help for people with low-to-moderate incomes.

No prior experience needed. Free tax law training and materials are provided that assist you with learning how to prepare tax returns and the tax deductions and credits that benefit eligible taxpayers. Following the self-study period, certification at the Advanced Level is required (accomplished through an online exam which preparers may take up to 2 times and pass with an 80 percent).

Hours are flexible—you set the hours you can work. Volunteers generally serve an average of five hours per week at sites in the New River Valley (Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski Counties) from February through the tax filing deadline in April.

Volunteers are needed to both prepare income tax returns and to perform quality review of returns prepared by other volunteers.

The Salvation Army

Volunteers are needed on Fridays to help cook at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg. If interested, you must also be willing to serve meals and clean up when needed. For more information, contact Sherry Bowman at 540-553-1607.

Project Linus

A Blanket Day is set for February 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grove United Methodist Church. For more information, call Penny Sweet at 230-6209.
