Volunteer Opportunities

AARP Pet Food Drive

The AARP Blacksburg Chapter is hosting a Pet Food Drive on Tuesday, Nov. 20, for homebound seniors. The program is sponsored by the NRV Agency on Aging, and the pet food will be distributed by the drivers for Meals on Wheels. Donations of bagged dry dog or cat food will be accepted during the AARP Blacksburg Chapter meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Blacksburg Community Center at 11:30 a.m. Most seniors have small dogs, so buy accordingly. If you cannot attend the meeting, please contact Sally Anna Stapleton at 540-250-3908.

Holiday Tote Bags

Volunteers are needed on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 1-3 p.m. to help us finish decorating tote bags to be distributed to Heritage Hall at Christmas. RSVP Volunteer Fran Hart will assist volunteers and provide guidance on how to decorate the bags. If you can cut fabric, iron, paint, or glue, your help is needed! No experience is necessary to join the fun!

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is hosting a Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at noon. Volunteers are needed to help with setup, serving, and cleanup. Please contact Major Rebecca Mott at 540-394-1037 or the RSVP office by Friday, Nov. 16, to sign up.

Dental Aid NRV

Dental Aid NRV is providing dental screenings in five of the elementary schools in Blacksburg during the month of November. Two will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, and three will be held on Friday, Nov. 16. In an effort to help the school nurses, they need a third person to assist the screening team. The volunteer job description is quite simple. If the dental team determines that the child’s teeth are in good condition, the volunteer will pull a sticker from the child’s clothing and attach it to a letter. At the end of each screening, the volunteer will be responsible for turning in their letters with stickers to the classroom teacher. Please contact the RSVP office for more information and to sign up.

Good Samaritan Hospice

Volunteers are needed to donate baked goods for a reception on Friday, Nov. 9, to be held prior to a memorial service hosted by Good Samaritan Hospice. They are anticipating 50 to 70 guests. They would like donations of brownies, cupcakes, and cakes brought in disposable plates or containers to 1160 Moose Drive in Christiansburg. Please contact the RSVP office to sign up to help.

Christiansburg Police Department Citizens Support Group

Volunteers are needed to make pies for the annual Christiansburg Police Department holiday dinner on Dec. 7. Call RSVP if you would like to bake pies for this event.
