Initiating suits

The Circuit Court has exclusive jurisdiction in cases involving $15,000 and higher. It shares jurisdiction with the General District Court in cases between $4,500 and $14,999. For cases below $4,500, the case is within the jurisdiction of the General District Court.

Policy for providing information to the public
This policy defines the information that Circuit Court Clerk's Office employees can offer to the public. Its purpose is to ensure that the ethical and legal guidelines on the authorized practice of law are not violated, as established by the:

  • Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended;
  • Supreme Court of Virginia; and
  • Virginia State Bar.

Clerk's Office staff are NOT attorneys and are NOT to give legal advice. Under Virginia law, ONLY a licensed attorney may provide legal advice. Clerk's Office staff may NOT provide information on how to fill out legal forms, etc. Clerk's Office staff may ONLY give general procedural information (i.e., filing fees, service fees).

Unrepresented litigants are advised to consult with a licensed, practicing attorney.
