Board of Supervisors Approves Ordinance Waiving Penalty and Interest on June 5 Real Estate Tax Payments for 90 Days

2020A Real Estate Taxes Are Due June 5, 2020

In response to the current economic conditions due to the existing public health situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance on May 11, 2020, to waive penalty and interest for 90 days on the 2020A real estate taxes due on June 5, 2020, for those taxpayers experiencing financial hardship.  

The ordinance will be effective through September 3, 2020. A 10 percent penalty will be charged on 2020A real estate if not paid by September 3, 2020. Interest will be charged at the rate of 10 percent per annum beginning October 1, 2020.

Treasurer's duties

The Treasurer is an elected official responsible for the receipt and collection of revenue from local, state and federal sources. The Treasurer collects, disburses and invests County funds, maintains a general ledger and collects local and state taxes.

Credit/debit cards (including VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express) and eCheck may be used online. When prompted, enter the information requested.

A service fee will apply (please note: Montgomery County does not receive any portion of the service fee):

  • Credit and Debit Cards: 2.35%, with a minimum fee of $2.00.
  • eCheck: $1.00 flat fee per payment

24-hour drop box - Montgomery County Government Center 
Checks or money orders can be dropped in the 24-hour Treasurer's Office drop box, 755 Roanoke St., at the Chinquapin Trail entrance. Tax payments are considered on time if they are deposited by midnight or postmarked on the due date. Please do not put cash in the drop box.

Returned check fees and DMV stops
Effective January 1, 2019, pursuant to the Code of Virginia, Section 15.2-106, there is hereby imposed a fee of $50.00 for the uttering, publishing or passing of any check, draft or order for payment of taxes or any other sum due, which is subsequently returned for insufficient funds, or because there is no account or the account has been closed or because such check, draft or order was returned because of a stop-payment order placed in bad faith on the check, draft or order by the drawer. This fee shall be in addition to any other fee or penalty provided by law. 

The Treasurer will only accept guaranteed funds when paying taxes and fees associated with a vehicle registration withholding (DMV STOP). Guaranteed funds accepted are cash, cashier's check, certified check, money order and credit/debit card.  Fees will apply for credit/debit card payments.
