Ellett Valley Loop Trail
Section 5 | Support the Trail | Images | Links

This conceptual plan and any subsequent implementation is envisioned as a joint venture between the Town of Blacksburg and Montgomery County. Both entities will share the cost of the planning and development of the trail, as well as the many benefits that such a trail might provide for their communities and residents. The trail would be a key component in the Town's overall plan for a system of greenway trails and would comprise a section of what is referred to as the Outer Loop, a trail around the perimeter of Blacksburg. |
The area for the route is bounded by the Cedar Run watershed basin along State Route 603, Norfolk Southern Railroad, adjacent to the Ellett Valley Nature Park, VDOT Smart Road, and South Main Street in Blacksburg. Town-owned properties within this area have been given due consideration as primary locations for portions of the trail route.
| Section 5 - Cedar Run Falls Pedestrian Trail |
| Description |
The Cedar Run pedestrian-only route is a short trail beginning at the convergence of the Cedar Run waterway and the Norfolk and Southern railroad tracks, directly across from the junction of Buckskin Road and State Route 603. The trail ascends the stream on Town-owned property between the stream bed and State Route 603. The proposed pedestrian trail ends near scenic water features at the property boundary line. |
| Inventory |
A collapsed, non-working springhouse and non-working water tank system are located on Town property.
A stand of White Cedar trees is located in the streambed floodplan.
The plant community includes varied spring ephemerals.
The canopy layer is dominated by Oak and Hickory species.
The stream watershed lies within two slopes, bounded by the Norfolk Southern Railroad and South Main Street.
Multiple waterfall features are located along the stream bed from the Hamlin property to the railroad tracks. |
| Analysis |
The terrain will support only a pedestrian trail construction due to the steep topography and limited area. Tread construction would include varied bench type, drainage structures, and steps. Bridges would be necessary for safe stream crossings. |
