What are your office hours?

    The Treasurer's Office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

What are my payment options?

    • MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards are accepted in the Treasurer's Office or by phone (540) 382-5723 with no additional service provider charge.

    • Credit card (including American Express and Discover) and eCheck can be used by calling 1-800-272-9829 or going to www.officialpayments.com. When prompted, enter the information requested and use Jurisdiction Code 6208. After authorization of your payment, a confirmation number is provided and should be kept for your records. A service provider charge will apply:
      • Credit/Debit Card - 2.5% of the payment amount (minimum fee of $1)
      • eCheck - amounts up to $10,000 - $2.50; over $10,000 - $15
    Montgomery County Government Center - 24-hour drop box
    • Check or money order can be dropped in the 24-hour Treasurer's Office drop box located at 755 Roanoke St. - Chinquapin Trail entrance. Tax payments are considered on-time if they are deposited by midnight of the due date. Please do not put cash in the drop box.

Does the Treasurer's Office charge a returned check fee?

    Yes. The Treasurer's Office charges a $35 returned check fee in the event a bank fails to honor any check tendered in payment of taxes, penalties, interest, fees or other charges.
     
    The Treasurer's Office will only accept guaranteed funds when paying taxes and fees associated with a vehicle registration withholding (DMV STOP). Guaranteed funds accepted are cash, cashier's check, certified check, money order and credit/debit card.

Do you have a drop box?

    A drop box is located near the main entrance to the Government Center off Chinquapin Trail Drive in Christiansburg. The Treasurer's drop box can be used anytime to drop off payments for taxes, motor vehicle license fees, dog tags and PSA water bills.

Where do I need to report a change of address?

    The Commissioner of the Revenue's office will need this address change for future tax billing. Contact that office at (540) 382-5710.

Who do I call if I didn't receive a tax bill?

    Real estate taxes are due June 5 and Dec. 5. Personal property taxes are due Dec. 5. Tax bills are mailed approximately four weeks before the due date. If you do not receive a tax bill by two weeks before the due date, contact the Treasurer's Office at (540) 382-5723.

If I live in Christiansburg or Blacksburg do I pay Montgomery County taxes?

    Christiansburg and Blacksburg are towns in the boundaries of Montgomery County. Your property will be assessed for Montgomery County taxes. You may call the Town of Christiansburg at (540) 382-6128 or the Town of Blacksburg at (540) 961-1105 to discuss your tax liabilities with the appropriate town.

When do I need to purchase a dog tag?

    When a puppy is four months old it is required to have a dog tag.

What does a dog license cost, when do they go on sale and where can they be purchased?

    An annual fee of $5 is charged for male or female dogs and $3 for an unsexed (spayed or neutered) dog. A 20-dog kennel tag is $25 and a 50-dog kennel is $35. Dog tags go on sale Nov. 1 of each year. Dog tags can be purchased at the Treasurer's Office or the Blacksburg Municipal Building.

How do I get a dog tag?

    You must present a valid certification of vaccination, signed by the licensed veterinarian performing the vaccination, specifying the date of the vaccination, the expiration date, a brief description of the dog, sex of the dog and name and address of the animal's owner.

When may I renew my County motor vehicle license?

    A motor vehicle license fee of $23.50 is due each year on Dec. 5. All outstanding personal property taxes must be paid in full before a County motor vehicle license is issued.

What must I do if I trade vehicles or buy a vehicle?

    A motor vehicle license fee is assessed each calendar year based on Jan. 1 ownership/garage jurisdiction. For calendar year 2009 and subsequent years the license fee is due on Dec. 5 of the preceeding year and will be billed by the Treasurer at the same time as personal property taxes.

If I move into Montgomery County from another jurisdiction, will Montgomery County honor the other jurisdiction's decal or motor vehicle license until it expires?

    Montgomery County will honor the decal or motor vehicle license from another jurisdiction until the expiration date.

If my vehicle is garaged in Christiansburg or Blacksburg do I pay a County motor vehicle license fee?

    No. Contact the Town of Christiansburg at (540) 382-6128 or the Town of Blacksburg at (540) 961-1105 for motor vehicle license/decal information on vehicles garaged in those jurisdictions.
