The Montgomery County Cannery closed permanently in 2011. It was located behind the log cabin on the campus of Auburn High School in Riner.

History
In the 1940s, most counties in Virginia had a community cannery. Many counties — including Montgomery — had more than one. Now only a handful of counties have canneries. These canneries were used by individuals to can homegrown or purchased meats,fruits and vegetables. Several charities also used the cannery for fundraisers to support community needs.
