New River Valley Emergency Communications Regional Authority
Importance
  • The centralized 911 dispatch center will more quickly and accurately route calls to the appropriate local emergency medical, fire and law enforcement agencies by reducing transfers. This will save valuable response time and, therefore, lives.
  • Consolidation will allow greater opportunities for and increased training of dispatch staff.
    • Current plans include the addition of medical priority dispatch, where the dispatcher quickly narrows down the type of medical trauma situation through a series of questions so that the appropriate resources are dispatched most efficiently and quality instructions can be delivered to the caller while services are in-transit.
  • Consolidation will also ensure that equipment and associated purchases among the agencies will allow for greater radio and dispatch interoperability among the participating organizations, increasing the region's ability to respond quickly and efficiently to any large-scale situation.
  • Consolidation will provide efficient communication due to standardized dispatch and call handling protocols.
