About the Commonwealth's Attorney:  Commonwealth's Attorney Mary Pettitt has served in the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office since 2005. Mary is a native Virginian who graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in Business Administration from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. Prior to working for Montgomery County, she served as a prosecutor in Roanoke County and Gloucester County.

About the office:  The Commonwealth's Attorney serves as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer for the County, prosecutes all felonies and certain misdemeanors and traffic offenses, and advises citizens, law enforcement agencies, and magistrates regarding interpretation of criminal law.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office consists of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys and support staff.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office prosecutes criminal cases on behalf of the citizens of Montgomery County. The office does not handle civil cases such as divorces, landlord/tenant disputes, estates, wills and real estate.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office works with the Sheriff’s Office and surrounding police departments, the Women’s Resource Center, VASAP and New River Valley Community Corrections, and Pretrial Services. The Victim-Witness Program is located in the office.
